…e arriva quel giorno in cui ti prepari a scoprire se la scelta che hai fatto era un po’ una follia perché nel viaggio itinerante made in UK non potevamo prescindere dalla famigerata guida a sinistra…

Tra crampi alle gambe e finestrini sfiorati (anche un po’ più che sfiorati) salutiamo Londra passando per il mega parco di Richmond con i suoi cervi (che ad agosto evidentemente stanno al fresco) per arrivare alla nostra casa per i prossimi giorni: un meraviglioso cottage inglese a Chipstead.

In un attimo siamo perfettamente integrati nella campagna del Surrey, tappa al primo Starbucks (splendidamente british) e rotta verso Hastings per una prima occhiata al Canale della Manica e all’amato Mare del Nord. Siamo sulla costa sud dell’Inghilterra, nell’East Sussex, e per qualche giorno vivremo la vita in vacanza degli autoctoni, tra fish and chips, parchi giochi sui Pier e gabbiani (taaaanti!).

Ad Hastings bellissimo l’Hastings Smugglers Adventure, percorso nelle grotte-rifugio dei contrabbandieri, e la funicolare che porta in cima alla collina, tra silenzio, mare e panorami indimenticabili.

Concludiamo la giornata a Rye, gioiellino del Sussex dove ceniamo al Pub The Globe Inn Marsh (consigliatissimo!)

Tips:

Attenzione ai gabbiani! Rubano letteralmente il cibo dalle mani Parcheggiare lontano dalla spiaggia perché l’auto diventa subito la loro (devi lasciargli le chiavi e amen)

Folla: anche in pieno agosto la “folla” non è assolutamente paragonabile a quella italiana

Per la guida a sinistra: INDISPENSABILE il cambio automatico (e ripetersi in testa “resta a sinistra, resta a sinistra”)

…and then comes the day you wonder whether your choice was a bit crazy — because on a UK road trip, you simply can’t avoid the infamous left-hand driving…

Between leg cramps and side mirrors brushing a little too close (okay, maybe more than a little), we leave London behind, passing through the vast Richmond Park with its deer (who, in August, apparently prefer to stay in the shade), and head towards our home for the next few days: a beautiful English cottage in Chipstead.

In no time, we feel perfectly immersed in the Surrey countryside. A quick stop at Starbucks (surprisingly British in vibe!) and then off towards Hastings for our first glimpse of the English Channel and the beloved North Sea.

We’re on the south coast of England, in East Sussex, and for a few days we’ll live like locals on holiday: fish and chips, seaside piers with playgrounds, and seagulls… so many seagulls!

In Hastings, don’t miss the Hastings Smugglers Adventure, a fascinating journey through smugglers’ caves, and the funicular railway that takes you up the hill — where silence, sea views, and unforgettable landscapes await.

We end the day in Rye, a true Sussex gem, with dinner at The Globe Inn Marsh (highly recommended!).

Tips:

➡️ Watch out for seagulls! They literally snatch food from your hands

➡️ Park away from the beach — otherwise your car basically becomes theirs (just hand over the keys 😄)

➡️ Crowds: even in August, they’re nothing compared to Italy

➡️ Driving on the left: an automatic car is ESSENTIAL (and keep repeating in your head “stay left, stay left”)
