Ghent, getting lost inside a painting by René Magritte 🎨✨

Gand, ovvero come perdersi in un’opera di Magritte.

Lasciamo l’Olanda per trascorrere gli ultimi giorni in Belgio e il confine segna un cambiamento tangibile: scompaiono l’ordine e la calma lungo le strade, ricominciano i clacson, ricompaiono i cartelli “only cash”.

Prima di arrivare alla nostra prossima meta facciamo una sosta all’Atomium, nel parco Heysel alle porte di Bruxelles, gigantesca costruzione in acciaio che rappresenta i 9 atomi di un cristallo di ferro, testimonianza dell’Esposizione Universale del 1958.

Ma la vera sorpresa sta per arrivare e si chiama Gand. Porto tra due fiumi, questa cittadina belga è un gioiello, tanto (ma tanto) più bella della più famosa Bruges. Gand è un quadro di Magritte che prende vita, nel riflesso dell’acqua del fiume, città di mercanti che incarna lo spirito delle Fiandre. Scelta un po’ per caso, avremo la fortuna di trascorrere qui un paio di giorni. Gand si rivelerà essere uno dei luoghi più belli mai visti (con fantastiche moules-frites!)

We leave the Netherlands to spend our final days in Belgium, and the border marks a tangible shift: the calm and order of the roads fade away, horns return, and so do the “only cash” signs.

Before reaching our next destination, we stop at the Atomium, in the Heysel Park just outside Brussels — a massive steel structure representing the nine atoms of an iron crystal, a legacy of the 1958 World Expo.

But the real surprise is yet to come, and it’s called Ghent.

A port city between two rivers, Ghent is a true gem — far (far) more beautiful than the more famous Bruges. It feels like a Magritte painting come to life, reflected in the water of the river — a merchant city that perfectly captures the spirit of Flanders.

Chosen almost by chance, we’re lucky enough to spend a couple of days here. And Ghent turns out to be one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen (with unforgettable moules-frites!).
